Breaking Free

Breaking Free

Do you ever feel like you're living someone else’s script—programmed to follow a path that doesn’t truly fit? You've been taught to chase perfection, but no matter how hard you try, it leaves you empty, unsatisfied. Your days are spent meeting the needs of others, fulfilling obligations that don't bring you joy. Deep down, there's a part of you longing to break free, to live for yourself. Are you caught in the tug-of-war between who you're expected to be by everyone around you and who you truly want to become?

A Life Divided

I grew up between two vastly different worlds—one shaped by my parents' traditional Asian values and the other by the high-paced, individualistic culture of American society. As a first-generation Asian American woman, I was caught in a constant tug-of-war. The pressure was relentless: be hardworking, quiet, subservient, beautiful, skinny, successful, and above all—perfect.

I felt like I was on autopilot, programmed to meet the expectations of everyone around me—my family, my workplace, and society. My mother would remind me to settle down and marry before I became "an old maid," while at work, I worked harder than many of my male colleagues, only to be overlooked for promotions and larger projects. And then there was social media, reminding me daily that I wasn’t doing enough, that I wasn’t enough.

For years, I was a people-pleaser, living for others, not knowing my own worth or purpose—just chasing the role society set for me with one end goal in mind: to become a wife and mother. But the more I began to step away from these imposed ideals, the more I realized something crucial: the moments when I started living for myself, I felt happy. For the first time, I was making choices that aligned with my values and desires.

But that happiness came with a price. I wrestled with guilt, feeling like I was betraying my family, as if I was somehow wrong for wanting something different. The weight of cultural expectations can feel suffocating, leaving us feeling stuck, ashamed, or worse, invisible.

There came a breaking point—a moment when I realized I couldn’t continue living under these crushing expectations. I had to redefine success and happiness on my own terms, to carve out my own path, my own voice. And it’s been liberating.

There are many things we don’t talk about—what it’s like to live in between cultures, to carry the weight of expectations, and to challenge traditional roles as a woman. I started this newsletter to share my journey of breaking free from those confines, and to create a space where we can openly talk about what it means to live authentically.

I invite you to join me on this journey. Let’s challenge these expectations together. Let’s create a community where we can be ourselves, unapologetically, without second-guessing our choices.

Subscribe to my newsletter, and let’s start this conversation. Together, we can redefine what it means to live the life you choose.
